The Manager of All Team’s Attacks

Every player’s position on the field has the purpose: a goalkeeper saves the goals from scoring; the defenders help him and secure the box; the midfielders support the backs as well as the forwards; forwards have to score a goal. But there is one special role on the pitch which could be compared with a “driving gear” in the mechanism of the watch. It’s an attacking midfielder who is a very important figure in attack’s development.
In Germany people call him “spielmacher”, in Italy – “trequartista”. But usually he has a status of “playmaker”. The playmaker is the heart, soul and the brain of the team. It’s a very responsible role in the team, but sometimes managers prefer to deny this position on the field and use quite simple 4-4-2 formation. In 4-2-1-3, for instance, there is a place for a playmaker who stands behind the forwards and supports them in attacks. His main task is to provide the forwards with accurate crosses and clever passes, cutting the opponent’s defense. Sometimes he takes a role of forward and creates the scoring chances by himself. Also it’s a very frequent situation when the player with these abilities takes a direct free-kick.
